How to Split a PDF Into Separate Files

To split a PDF, choose which pages go into each new file, either by page ranges (such as 1-3, 4-6, 7) or by a fixed number of pages per file, then download the results. Splitting copies pages as they are, so text, fonts and images keep their original quality.

Quick answer: split a PDF in 4 steps

  1. Open the Split PDF tool.
  2. Drop in your PDF.
  3. Choose a mode: page ranges, or every N pages.
  4. Download the files, ideally as one ZIP.

Everything happens in your browser, so the document is not uploaded.

Page range syntax

Ranges are comma-separated. Each group becomes one output file.

You type You get
1-3, 4-6, 7 Three files: pages 1 to 3, pages 4 to 6, and page 7
2, 5, 9 Three single-page files
5- One file from page 5 to the end
1- The whole document as one file

Three ways to split

By range

Best when sections are uneven: chapters of a report, separate documents scanned into one file, or splitting a contract from its appendices. You decide exactly where each file starts and ends.

Every N pages

Best for evenly sized batches. A 12-page file split every 4 pages gives three 4-page files. Typical uses are one invoice per two pages, or one worksheet per three.

Single pages

Splits every page into its own file. This is handy before reordering with Organize PDF, or when each page is a separate document, such as a batch of scanned receipts.

Split or extract: which one do you need?

Split PDF Extract Pages
Output Several files One new file
Use when You need the whole document divided up You need only some pages
Original file Unchanged Unchanged

Splitting divides the whole document into several files. If you only need a few pages, Extract Pages saves just those pages as a single new PDF. To drop pages you do not want, use Delete Pages.

Worked examples

Pull out one chapter. The chapter is on pages 14 to 29. Use Extract Pages with 14-29 and save it as a new PDF.

Separate a scanned batch. A 10-page scan holds five 2-page forms. Use every-N-pages with N = 2 and download the ZIP; you get five files.

Remove a signature page before sharing. Use Delete Pages with the page number, then share the shorter file.

Divide a large file for email. Split into parts by range, then run each through Compress PDF if they are still large.

Why the page numbers are "wrong"

PDF tools count physical pages starting at 1, regardless of the numbers printed on the pages. If a document has a cover and a table of contents numbered i, ii, iii before "page 1", the printed page 1 may be physical page 5. When in doubt, scroll to the page in your viewer and use the page counter, not the printed number.

Tips

  • Check page numbers first. Confirm the physical page counts before typing ranges.
  • Locked file? Unlock the PDF before splitting.
  • Need the pieces smaller? Run each one through Compress PDF.
  • Putting pieces back together later? Merge PDF joins them in any order.
  • Sensitive file? A local tool keeps it on your device; see Is it safe to use online PDF tools?

Troubleshooting

  • The ZIP is empty or a range is skipped. Make sure ranges use hyphens and commas only, and that no page number exceeds the page count.
  • A file will not open in the tool. It may be encrypted or damaged. Try Unlock PDF or Repair PDF.
  • Output files are much bigger than expected. Shared resources such as fonts and images can be copied into each part; compress the parts afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Use the every-N-pages mode; for 12 pages, N = 4 gives three files.
